Desmond Kensington served ten years for a crime his father committed. He took the sentence to keep the old man out of a cell, and he comes home for one reason, which is his mother. The house he returns to belongs in practice to his stepmother Veronica and her son Roland, born outside the marriage, and the two of them make the ex-convict's presence a daily humiliation. Desmond takes it and says little. Underneath that he is moving on the Kensington Group piece by piece: first the security division, then the Metropolis Club, then Pinnacle Capital, until the company's core answers to him. He has a second name in the city, Lord Nonus, which carries weight in rooms where Desmond Kensington is a joke, and he keeps the two identities apart. He works with Elena and starts pulling on the circumstances of his elder brother's death, which was never as simple as the family agreed to say it was, and on what Veronica did to arrange the years he lost.
