An aristocratic family took in an orphan and raised her on the terms that she would be turned into a socialite and placed where the family could use her. The child was Lena. She was controlled and mistreated in that house for years, and when the future they had arranged for her came due she faked her own death and disappeared. She comes back under another name as the missing heiress of one of the country's most powerful families. She goes after the adoptive family that ran her, and after the blood family that never came looking for her. Julian is in the way of both. He is a rising figure in politics who stood as a sort of uncle to her while she was growing up in that house, and he has loved her since then, and he has handed her over more than once when his own position needed it. They spend as much time working against each other as pulling each other out of things.
