Letting Go of What Once Was

Daniel Young came back to the family that had lost him years before, and the household rearranged itself around him. Vincent had been taken in as a son during the years Daniel was gone. What the family handed Daniel now came out of Vincent's share. Kate Quinn, who was engaged to Vincent, made him give up his graduate school recommendation so that Daniel could have it. When he held out she put him outside in heavy rain. He agreed to her terms and was ill afterwards from the hours he had spent out there. Kate sat with him until Daniel phoned, then left him alone in the house. Vincent decided he would finish the research he was working on and then leave. Daniel told the family he had no results of his own to show them. Kate took Vincent's research and passed it to Daniel, and she told people that Vincent had copied it. He was called a plagiarist and lost his standing in the department.
