Annie is five years old and she can understand what animals say to her. The animals around her tend to know what is happening before the people do. Landon Hawthorne had money and a habit of taking himself apart, and he had got as far as deciding to end his life when Annie stopped him. He adopted her afterwards and gave her whatever she asked for. She kept him out of things he had no way of seeing coming, because the animals had already seen them. His grandfather was found that way. So were children who had gone missing, and after that a good many other people who would not have got out otherwise.
