Ethan held Scarlett's father responsible for the death of his own father, and he was wrong about that. He had Scarlett committed to a psychiatric hospital. She was there for two years and it was not a quiet two years. His stepmother Evelyn was running a scheme of her own against him, and getting in front of it required a wife. He took Scarlett out and married her on a three-month term. "Don't get any ideas," he told her. "This is one more way for you to pay for what your family did."
