Cooking Up Revenge, Serving It Hot

John Hall and his cousin Cody Hall ran a restaurant together on John's family recipes. It went to the top of the local ratings and cleared five million a year. At the end of the year Cody handed John twenty thousand and told him that was his share, on the reasoning that the apprentice Sun Kai had picked up all the techniques by watching and John was no longer necessary. John did not argue. He took his savings and rented a small place directly across the street from the new restaurant Cody was about to open, and went on buying fresh and cooking the old way. Cody wanted the margin and put Sun Kai onto using expired ingredients. The new restaurant opened, the food was worse, and word travelled. John's little place filled up on nothing but the cooking.
