The Infamous Guide

The woman whose body she wakes up in has been sentenced to exile on a prison planet for abusing an elite Sentinel. That woman was a rare Guide with the worst reputation in the galaxy, and her hobby was wrecking the minds of top-ranked Sentinels for fun. The new occupant arrived in this world by accident and wants to live down the original's reputation. She runs from the base the same night. In this world the fighting is done by Sentinels, and a Guide is someone who can go into a Sentinel's mind and steady it. A Sentinel who goes too long without a Guide slips into a crisis that either kills him or drives him mad. The first Sentinel she has to deal with is one the original woman had been keeping as a prisoner. She looks after him carefully, tries to undo the damage, and finds she has an unusually strong healing ability. Later she pulls a second Sentinel out of a breakdown, and she makes peace with their spirit creatures. The two of them find her hard to square with the woman they knew, and both come to depend on her. Their gratitude starts turning into an obsession. At the same time the Sentinels at the base, who each hold their own grudge against the original, come out looking for her.
