Eva Dalton's tie to the young general of the Crowell family goes back seven years before she enters his house. Eva is a physician. Lightning strikes her and she comes to inside a storybook she has read, where the general is the character she had been infatuated with. She marries him in place of the bride he was supposed to get. In the book as she read it, treacherous men frame the Crowells and the family comes to a bad end, and she swears to change that. The crown prince, with a woman who acts alongside him, accuses the Crowell family of treason, of collaborating with the enemy. Eva opens a beauty house, treats the sick, and works at exposing the plots against the family, siding with the Crowells against the prince's household and the family behind the accusation. She and the general come to love each other over this time. The fight involves poison, a lost memory, a struggle over the throne and secrets kept inside the family.
