Zhou Sheng is lying in the mud of Waste Bay, where the water is toxic, and the people who see him there call him a cripple and give him three days. He had been at a celebration dinner. His girlfriend of three years walked in on the arm of the friend he had known for twenty years, and she threw the pearl he had proposed with into a sewer drain. The two of them took the dividend, in the tens of millions, that he had earned by putting his life on the line, and then had him kicked out to the bay like a dog. He wears a black glove. The hand under it can hear the pulse of the mutant clams that live at the bottom of the bay, and those clams carry pearls. He starts working the bottom of the bay for them, poison and all.
