Dylan's grandfather asks, as he is dying, that Dylan marry James, Dylan's stepbrother. Dylan has been in love with James for years and does it in secret. Dylan is a transgender young man who does not speak and suffers badly from gender dysphoria. James believes a public marriage to him would finish his standing in the elite Western society he moves in, so he lets himself be seen as the boyfriend of a woman named Yvonne. He does love Dylan, and his own upbringing and fear of being left are what push him to hide it behind that treatment. Mrs. Lucas, meanwhile, is working to take control of the family by swapping one heir for another, and she and Yvonne go after Dylan together more than once. Dylan reaches the end of what he can bear and jumps from a building. He survives the fall with no memory of who he is, and a woman named Vance and a man take him in and look after him. After that James settles accounts with the people responsible for it.
