Juniper is in love with Tristan, a rock musician everyone on their campus knows. He is the best friend of her older brother Carter, who keeps a close watch on her, and to Tristan she is a younger sister he barely registers. The power fails one night and the two of them are shut in together in the dark, where neither sees the other's face. Juniper says nothing about it afterwards. A butterfly bracelet of hers is left behind, and Tristan remembers a birthmark shaped like a butterfly on the girl he was with. He starts looking for her with those two things to go on, and he talks about the search at the kitchen table with Juniper sitting across from him. Carter does not know that his best friend slept with his sister.
