The Phantom Pilot

Mitch Peterson is a trainee at SkyForge, the flight program the military reserves for its best pilots. Until recently he was a janitor at a Navy base. That base came under attack and he stopped it, and nobody knew it was him. The military moved him into the program after that. He has rivals inside the program who go after him without restraint. He keeps flying, and it becomes clear he is a pilot of a kind the program sees once in a generation. His father was a fighter pilot who left the service in disgrace and later died. Inside SkyForge Mitch comes across a conspiracy tied to that death, and a senator with a great deal of power is working to keep it buried.
