The Pei family is one of the most powerful in Beijing, with money enough to pay for a cancer cure and to attach conditions to it. Seven years ago the family's heir, Pei Jingshen, was sick with cancer. His girlfriend, Shen Lu, did not know what family he came from. The Peis told him they would pay for his treatment if he left her. He refused. Shen Lu was pregnant at the time, and she overheard the argument. She left without a word, so he would be free to accept the treatment. On the way she was hit by a car. Jingshen believed she had died. She survived, with brain damage that left her mind impaired, and she gave birth to their daughter An'an on her own. Seven years on Shen Lu's health is failing, and An'an, still a small child, begs on the streets to get by. She keeps running into Jingshen.
