After the Ring Came Off

Three years earlier, Vera's husband decided she was in love with another man. He was wrong, but he never said so, and he spent the marriage punishing her for it while she did the same back. On their third wedding anniversary Vera learns he has got another woman pregnant, and this time she files for divorce. At an auction he turns up with his new partner and provokes her openly, and they have it out in front of everyone. Later he hears she has gone to a hotel room with a man and goes there to catch her at it, and finds it is a misunderstanding. The divorce does not go through. His grandmother steps in to keep them together. He wants the marriage back and mishandles every attempt at it, and the other woman keeps interfering, so the things between them that were never cleared up pile higher.
