Gabriel Ortega's father dies, and the circumstances are never explained. Gabriel is the only heir to the Ortega fortune and estate, and after the death he withdraws from everyone. The one person he still talks to is Mary, the young household help. The will requires him to marry before he can take the fortune. His stepmother Catherine Ortega pushes a young woman on him, Estelle Castor, expecting the two to get along and marry. Catherine's plan is to use Estelle to get hold of the inheritance and keep it for herself and her son Jonas, leaving Estelle a share. Gabriel shows almost no interest in Estelle.
