Claire Evens is an actress trying to get work, in a relationship with the producer Mitch Sterling that neither of them makes public. She becomes pregnant. Mitch turns aggressive and presses her to end the pregnancy, then pushes her out of his life. She meets Alex, a screenwriter who is not getting produced, and they become friends. Claire threatens to tell the press about the pregnancy. Mitch softens toward her and she takes it for a reconciliation. Alex tells her not to go with him. She goes anyway. Mitch turns on her and tries to get rid of Claire and the unborn child in the worst way he can manage. Alex sees it happen and loses consciousness just before they are found. Twenty years on Alex is a screenwriter the industry wants, and Claire's orphaned daughter Clara has become a well-known actress. Both of them are in demand, and both intend to make Mitch answer for what he did.
