Nancy wants a life of her own design work and a marriage she can trust, and she has neither. Her fiancé Wayne looks gentle. He is working with the designer Fiona to take Nancy's designs and to keep Nancy doubting her own judgment. Damon, a vampire of nearly four hundred years, has spent ten years watching over her without her knowing, because he promised Paz, her father and his comrade in battle, that he would. At the engagement party a client harasses Nancy and Damon steps in. They get closer after that. Nancy finds out Wayne has been unfaithful and that the stolen designs are his doing, and with Damon's help she brings it into the open. Wayne turns Damon's vampire identity into a weapon and traps him with it. Damon leaves to keep Nancy out of it, and she tells him plainly that she loves him anyway. What Damon is becomes public knowledge and the reaction forces the two of them apart. Three years later he comes back to the human world and finds her again.
