Erin and her mother-in-law can both produce money when they are in enough pain. Her husband's family knows about only one of them. In her first life Erin touched a money tree, a tree that produces money, and once the family understood what that had done to her they beat her, burned her and bled her for it until she died. She wakes on the night the tree first appeared. This time she arranges for her parents-in-law to be the ones who touch it. When her mother-in-law is hurt and money comes out of the wound, the family tests it, then stops holding back. "Hurt her more, and there is more money." Erin's husband drives a hairpin into his own mother. His father lets it happen and wants more. The mother-in-law is whipped and branded, and each time the money comes. Erin stays out of sight, working on the family's greed so that it goes a little further each time, and keeps the fact that she can do the same thing to herself.
