Marriages between the big houses are how land and business get settled here, and Victor, who speaks for the Nichols family, can have a rival household killed without answering for it. A car crash kills Jacqueline, the second Nichols daughter. Victor blames the head of the Jensen family, has Allison's father and brother killed, and holds Allison and her mother. The Waynes hold development rights to a piece of commercial land that Victor wants. He keeps Allison's mother as the thing he can take from her, and makes Allison live under Jacqueline's name so that a marriage to Alec Wayne, the third-generation heir, will bind the two houses. After the wedding Allison sleeps with Eric, Alec's uncle. People inside the Wayne house are the ones who tell her how much danger she is in, and she begins working out how to get herself clear of it, while what is between her and Eric turns into love and hate at once.
