Betrayal & Deception: When Lies Unfold

Vance Hale announces he is divorcing his wife at the party for their daughter's first birthday, in front of the guests, and gives his reason: Giselle York has taken to sleeping with a teddy bear the size of a person and has moved him into the guest room. Giselle tells him he is being ridiculous, jealous of a toy. He does not back down. When her assistant speaks up for her, Vance hits him in front of everyone. The York family offers to mediate and he turns them down coldly, hinting that he has someone else now. The split becomes a public story. Vance is exposed as the one who was unfaithful, and he answers in court by accusing Giselle of improper conduct with the bear, playing a video of her with it that was filmed without her knowledge. Her assistant says what the video shows is postpartum depression, and that Vance has put a secret recording of a sick woman into evidence. The room turns on him, reading the whole thing as a route to a divorce and a share of the York money, and calls for him to be charged. While they are arguing about it, the bear in the video moves. On appeal more of it comes apart: the woman Vance was supposed to be involved with is his sister, the nanny describes an attempt to set Giselle up, and a cleaned copy of the video shows a man was inside the bear.
