Seven years ago a woman went to a hotel to sell herself for her mother's medical bills and walked into the wrong room, where a man lay drugged. They slept together. She took half a jade pendant from the room and went on to the hospital. Her younger brother caused a death soon afterwards, and he and their mother pressed her to take the charge in his place. She was convicted, gave birth early in prison to a daughter, and hung the half pendant on the girl. The man spent the next six years looking for her and did not find her. The older woman came across the matching half of the pendant, put the two together, and worked out what it meant. The girl's uncle got hold of it and kept the matter quiet. The mother came through her operation. She looked for work at the man's department store, and a woman on the staff there set her up. The older woman obtained a DNA report on the girl.
