Plants can talk, and Layla is able to hear them. On the day her mother dies she phones her father, and then her mother's brother. Her father tells her not to come looking for him. The uncle's answer is that she should go and die. The richest man in the city happens to be passing, and he takes her home and makes her his daughter. She goes in expecting to be the pitied orphan. On the day she walks in, the grandmother waves a hand and goods from brand shops all over the city are brought in for her to pick through. The younger uncle, tight with money by reputation, says she can have the run of his savings, and the older brother goes around telling people his sister is the best in the universe. Layla pays them back with what the plants tell her. A flower tips her off to an employee who has been betraying her new father's company. The younger uncle's crippled leg is cured after she asks the grass what is wrong with it. She chats with a big tree and comes away with enough to get a murderer caught, and a cabbage lets slip that the grandfather, stern with everyone, does whatever his wife says at home. Her days go to gossip, gardening and settling scores with people who have it coming. Her birth father eventually learns where she has ended up and comes to the house wanting her back, which her new father refuses.
