Eleanor Vance handed the running of Splendor Group to her son and went to the countryside to work on rural development. She stayed three years, and her daughter lived out there with her. When the girl fell ill without warning, Eleanor brought her back to the city for treatment. She meant to retire after that, look after her daughter, and see her son married to his fiancée, Nancy Lane. For the wedding she set aside cash in the billions along with a block of shares in the group. She took her daughter to the group's jewellery store to choose the gift for the bride. Nancy was in the same store at the same hour, with her brother, working out how the two of them would take hold of the Vance family's assets once the marriage went through.
