Lu Wanqing, an Interpol officer, wakes up inside a workplace Mary Sue novel in the body of a sickly supporting character who is written to die at the opening. She has ten seconds of life left. An Emotion Collection System binds itself to her. It pays out life points in exchange for strong emotional reactions collected from the novel's villain, Li Nancheng, CEO of the Li Group, and the reactions that count are anger, shock and attraction. Li Nancheng has a rare emotional disorder. When his emotions run out of control he is at risk of suffocating. Lu Wanqing happens to calm one of his rages, and he hires her as his assistant. A staged collision between them brings both of their secrets into the open: her being near him is the only thing that relieves his attacks. She finds that his reactions are worth the most life points and goes on provoking him and then settling him, smashing antiques, cutting in on his lines and talking back to him. His disorder eases while she is around. Li Nancheng reads her behaviour as attraction and begins pursuing her. Su Man, the novel's original heroine, regards Lu Wanqing as a thorn in her side.
