Paisley Neal works as a researcher and spends her days being pushed around by her supervisor. She has been with Max Sutton for years. She learns he is cheating, and she joins with the other woman to corner him. Max dies in a car accident. The body is being used by something from Planet M62 that is learning to live among people. She decides to study it and publish the results under her own name. Ten years earlier a fragment of a star core was lost on Earth and absorbed by Paisley as a child. It bonded to her body, and it can only be taken back if she gives it up willingly and loves the one asking. Retrieval will take a long time, so he goes on living in the apartment as her boyfriend.
