Julia woke in another woman's body in an old dynasty, holding the woman's debts, her four daughters, and her eldest son-in-law, whom the woman had been in the habit of hitting and swearing at. The woman had gambled the household into what it owed and had arranged to sell the four daughters to clear it. Julia's last memory was of a mission she had run for Fortuna, where her own side sold her out and she was killed on it. The daughters would not come near her. When the collectors came to the house Julia put herself between them and the girls and beat the men off with what she had learned in her old work. She killed a tiger with her hands, and the sale of it covered the debts. She bought cloth, shoes, rice, and flour. The daughters began to trust her over time. Julia got them and her son-in-law out of the debts and into a settled household.
