As If We Were Meant

Grace Wright pays her college tuition by selling boxed lunches at construction sites, hauling the containers around the scaffolding between classes. On one of those days she crosses paths with Victor, the chairman of the Carter Group, and the night that follows is meant to be a single accident neither of them will mention again. Weeks later Grace collapses during a sports meet at school. The examination that follows tells her she is pregnant. Her stepmother hears of it and decides the matter herself, arranging an abortion and pushing Grace toward it whether she agrees or not. Victor reaches her before it is done. He takes her out of the situation his family's money can outweigh, and brings her into the Carter household, where the girl who was selling lunch boxes for tuition money is now living among the people who own the buildings she used to walk between.
