Pearls of Hope: No Wave Too Wild

Vivian Morgan can read the sea. She sees where the currents run under a flat surface, where the shelf drops away, and where the oysters worth opening are lying. Her mother was killed by her own brother, Vivian's uncle, who wanted what the family had. What is left of the family is a father who cannot work because of his disability and a younger sister still too young to earn. So Vivian dives. She goes down in water that has taken other divers, holds her breath past what is sensible, and comes up with pearls that pay for the household another week. The uncle who took her mother is still nearby, still counting what he thinks is coming to him, and the girl bringing up the pearls is the only one in the house who knows exactly what he did.
