The medicine that keeps Serena's mother alive costs hundreds of millions, and the one place that carries it is the Divine Clinic, which is fitted out as a hospital and run as a casino underneath. Rare drugs there are paid for with human organs, and the people who put their own bodies up as the stake do not come out of it well. Serena's mother is the only heir of the God of Gamblers. She taught Serena the game and then told her to keep the skill out of sight, since anyone known to have it ends up in danger. Serena's father gambles compulsively and has taken the household down with him. With nothing else left to try, Serena goes to the clinic herself. Her father sells her to one of the men inside as a bargaining chip. The man has never lost a bet. He loses to Serena, and after that he wants her where he can watch her. The two of them stop working against each other and start working together.
