Claire Stone's sister is seriously ill and the treatment costs more than Claire has, so she takes work at a hotel. That is where she runs into Victor Royce, who runs the Royce Group. Weeks later she finds out she is carrying twins. Victor's mother sees the birthmark on Claire's shoulder and decides it settles the question of who her son is meant to marry, and she pushes hard enough that Victor agrees to a marriage contract lasting one year. They move in as two people fulfilling terms. Claire goes back to work and finds the office has opinions about how she got there; people set things up for her to fail and some of it is aimed at the pregnancy. Victor puts himself between her and it every time, which was not in the contract. There are people from before, on both sides, with claims and old business that surface while the year runs down. What began as an arrangement his mother forced becomes something he does not want to end when the term does.
