Leno and the Alpha Kris sign a fake mate contract: Kris keeps Leno's Omega identity hidden, and Leno stands beside him as his partner in front of Kris's family and takes the pressure off him. Leno has passed as a Beta for years in a werewolf world sorted into Alpha, Beta and Omega, drinking potions brewed by the wizard Lancelot to suppress his pheromones. He does it to look for his older brother, who disappeared after a trial seven years ago. Kris, his rival, worked out the secret shortly before the next trial began, which is how the contract came about. They live and train together. The suspicion between them turns into trust and then into something neither planned for. Leno's stepmother Susan and Ethan move against him, and the other entrants in the trial are a threat of their own. The trial is brutal, and what waits on the other side of it is a chance to enter the human world. A letter left by his brother reaches Leno.
