The Mechanic I Married Owns Manhattan

Clara Bennett is driving away from her ex-husband Derek with her five-year-old daughter Lily in the back when the car dies in the rain outside a small town. Mason Hale runs the garage there. He puts them up, and when Derek's people come for her he stands in the doorway and says, "Then stay. Tonight, nobody takes you back." Clara takes him for exactly what he appears to be, a decent mechanic with a steady trade, and she proposes a temporary marriage because a married mother has a better chance in a custody fight. At the hearing Derek spends his time on Mason, on his hands and his income and his lack of anyone behind him. Then Mason's lawyers come in, with people from his company, and the court is told that the largest claim against Derek's firm belongs to him. He is the heir of a Manhattan real estate group and has been living where nobody would look for him.
