My Substitute Bride

Evelyn was the legitimate daughter of a New York family that had held its position for a hundred years, and when her father died the estate should have passed straight to her. Her illegitimate half-sister moved on it, and Evelyn's husband moved with her. The case Evelyn brought was solid on the documents. He had the courts arranged before the first hearing, and it collapsed. Her thirteen-year-old sister was taken and held to keep Evelyn quiet about the rest. Then came an attempt on their lives at close range, and when the blade was already moving her husband put her body in front of it, because the woman he actually loved was standing behind him. That was when Evelyn understood what she had been for the whole marriage. She had been standing in for someone else from the day of the wedding, useful for the name and the trust and nothing beyond that. She went to the cliff and went over it, and everything she does after that is aimed back at the people who signed the papers and held her sister.
