War God's Redemption: A Father's Promise

Xavi cleans rooms at a hotel and reads fortunes for coins on a bridge. He is the son the wealthiest man in Atheron lost track of years ago, and he is also the War God, which is the part nobody guesses. Five years back he spent one night with Wilma, an actress at the top of her profession. She has been raising a daughter alone since then. The girl, Xamira, has a heart condition and cannot speak, and she is quiet and obedient in a way that makes people uncomfortable. Wilma finds Xavi and tells him Xamira is his. He accepts it and starts doing what a father does. Wilma's own family has been angling for a foothold with a wealthier house, and their route to it is marrying her off to the family's patriarch, an old man whose kidneys are failing and who does not have long. They intend to send Xamira to an orphanage once the marriage is settled. On the wedding day Wilma is put through the ceremony beside the sick old man while Xamira is knocked around by the household. Xavi finds out what is happening and comes for both of them.
