Yang Fan wants to stop being the one everybody steps over. He has no money and no standing, and no way to answer the people who push him around. It goes as far as him nearly dying. In that state he touches the seal on an old pot and breaks it, and the spirit sealed inside comes out. It belonged to an immortal of the ancient world, and the two of them each have something the other wants. They agree terms and settle it as a master and a disciple. The immortal teaches him out of a tradition nobody passes down any more, and Yang Fan takes in as much of it as he can hold. His strength moves quickly after that, and the people who had written him off go on as before for a while.
