Madam from Village Shaking the Rich

Scarlett Raimon comes from a village and is studying in the city, paying her way with shifts at a club. She stumbles into a situation where an elderly woman, Mrs. Falcon, is being conned, and she steps in without knowing who the woman is. Mrs. Falcon is dying, and what she wants before she goes is to see her grandson Shelton married. Scarlett agrees to it as a favor to a dying woman. Shelton knows nothing about how the arrangement came together. Then he turns up at a party at the club where Scarlett works and reads what he sees there through the worst available lens. He decides she attached herself to his grandmother and then to him for the money, and he starts arranging a divorce. The evidence against her keeps stacking up in ways that have ordinary explanations he does not ask for. Scarlett does not defend herself much. The pieces come apart one at a time until Shelton understands what she actually did for his grandmother and what she has been living on.
