Ethan Zachary's mother decided it was time he married and gathered the daughters of the business families at the house so she could pick one out. Seven years before that, Elora Gilpin had just finished college. Two men would not leave her alone and put something in her drink. Ethan drove them off. The drug came on and the two of them ended up together that night. He left his card behind when he went. She never saw it, and the two of them lost each other. She gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Her family held the missing father against her and put her out, and she brought the two children up on her own. Her cousin had resented her looks and her brains for years and invited her along to the gathering to see her put down in front of everyone. Ethan's mother took to Elora instead. The cousin announced to the room that Elora had had the children out of wedlock, and Ethan's mother, who knew nothing about the night seven years earlier, went at her in front of the guests.
