The Green Lie and the Red Truth

Lily is ten. Since her birth her mother has kept a bracelet on her that is said to detect lies. When Lily says she is hungry, or hurt, or that she did not do something, the bracelet turns red and delivers a shock. Her twin sister Ruby wears a second bracelet that stays green at all times. Ruby breaks things and takes things and says Lily did it, and the bracelets agree with her. Their mother locks Lily up, leaves her alone when she cries, and gives Ruby the attention. On New Year's Eve Lily's appendix ruptures. She asks for help while the bracelet flashes red. Her mother treats it as a tantrum, shuts her in the room by herself and leaves to watch the fireworks. Lily writes in a diary what she was never believed about. Three days pass before her mother goes back into the room. She finds the diary, and she finds out what the bracelet was actually reading: fear and pain.
