Aurora is born of mixed blood in a world ruled by pureblood werewolves. The Wolf King takes her in and raises her in his household alongside his own son, Victor, the heir to the pack. Victor carries an old curse and has been confined to a wheelchair for years. On a full moon night the curse breaks loose in him and his beast form takes over. He seizes Aurora and marks her as his own before he returns to himself. After that night Victor keeps Aurora close, first as his personal maid, calling her his toy and putting her through humiliations while also refusing to let her out of his sight. Doctors and elders in the pack have found no way to lift the curse. Aurora's bloodline, rare among purebloods and known as Curse Breaker, turns out to be the one thing that can hold the affliction back. As Aurora tends to him and works to understand the curse, Victor's treatment of her shifts. He starts giving up the control he once held over her, following her lead, and putting himself in positions where she has the upper hand. Other pureblood families in the pack take notice of the change in the heir and begin moving against him, some out of old grudges with the Wolf King and some over the succession itself. The curse's origins trace back further than either Victor or Aurora first knew, tied to bargains made in the pack generations earlier.
