Owen founded the Silverlight Empire and could have taken a comfortable post at court. He chose the northern border and stayed there more than ten years, holding the frontier towns for the people who live in them, and never complained about the conditions. Princess Luna wants the northern garrisons for herself, because command of them is the shortest road to the throne. She has a charge of corruption and dereliction of duty drawn up against him. He is removed from the border, imprisoned, and put to hard questioning. Mia, the other candidate for the succession, gets him out of the cell before the interrogation finishes, and takes the core fighting units that were loyal to him along with her. That is an open break with Luna, and the contest for the throne turns into a war. The whole empire is on edge. Owen stands in Mia's camp watching Luna's flagship lift off in the distance, and says only that they can fight over the throne as they please, but nobody is to touch the people on the frontier.
