Zhou Yuyan and Jiang Zaoning, known in English as Julian Reed and Vivian Carter, had been married three years when Vivian's first love, Lu Chen, came back to the city. Julian had been the one to step back. He had been a courtroom lawyer with a reputation, and he gave it up to run the house while Vivian built her own practice, and by the third year he was a full-time husband and nothing else. After Lu Chen returned, Vivian believed what he told her about Julian. She blamed Julian for things he had not done and stood by while other people talked down to him in front of her. Julian filed for divorce and went back to practicing law. He took the hardest case available and won it.
