Lucy Walker and Cindy Walker grew up in the same orphanage. At Lucy's birthday party Cindy put a knife in her. Both of them died, and both of them woke up on the day the adoptions were decided, with the gold coin and the piece of bread laid out in front of them again. Cindy moved first and took the coin, which meant the Shaw family and their money. She pushed the bread across to Lucy and left it there, satisfied that she had settled where Lucy would spend her life. Lucy took the bread. What she had wanted was a family, and she got one. Years later, going by Cindy Shaw, she invited Lucy to a charity gala and put her to work carrying dishes in front of people who mattered. Jacob Shaw, her adoptive brother, made a pass at Lucy and was turned down flat. Cindy and a friend of hers mocked her and ruined the vegetables she was carrying. Then a gift arrived for Lucy, expensive enough that the room went quiet. In the pulling and shoving that followed, the jade pendant Lucy wore came into view, and somebody said it was the same as the one belonging to the richest family in the country. Nobody in the room would accept that a girl serving dishes could own such a thing. They made her drink, the pendant was broken, and she was about to be handed over to Jacob when her real family walked in.
