A wife in the Lu family holds her position at her husband's discretion, and the way to make it firm is a son. Su Xiaotang spent five years working at that, raising their daughter, waiting on his parents, and leaving Lu Chen all the room to himself he asked for. He used the room to keep a woman outside the house. To bring him back Su Xiaotang decided on a second child. When Lu Chen agreed to it she took the agreement as him settling the question of whether she was Mrs. Lu. What came of it was that he moved the other woman into the house to live.
