Your Money Can't Crush My Dignity

Valerie Stein is married to the richest man in Mile City, and Eva White is the surgeon the city has been waiting for. Valerie does not know that when they meet. Eva had saved the President's life shortly before and been named the country's top physician, and instead of settling into the recognition she travelled to Mile City to treat a boy who was dying there. She dresses plainly and does not announce herself, and Valerie takes her for a nobody, humiliates her, and crushes her hands. Eva's research is destroyed along with them. The abuse escalates from there. Eva keeps being dismissed whenever she says who she is, and the people doing it are still expecting the famous doctor to arrive. It is not clear whether she can still operate with her hands in that state. The local officials are corrupt and take the Steins' side.
