Mop in Hand, World at My Feet

An investment reception in China, put on by the S consortium, has a cleaning woman standing among the guests. They tell her what they think a cleaner is worth. Her ex-boyfriend is in the room, and so is his son, who once sat across from her at a matchmaking meeting. The cleaner is Ruth Ziegler. She lost her husband young, left her three-year-old son with her parents and went abroad to earn a living. What came out of those years was Vestra Chamber, the largest trade body of its kind in the world. She came home, said nothing about any of it and took a cleaning job at the company her son runs. She is at the reception as chairwoman of Vestra, which owns the consortium hosting it. The guests find out during the evening, and the ones who went furthest end up on their knees asking her to forgive them.
