Clive Benton sinks into a depression after Serena Alcott, his first love, leaves the country. Heidi Stroud owes the Bentons, who once supported her with money, and she is the one who pays. She gives up her scholarship to study abroad and marries Clive, and for five years she tries to bring him back to himself. Clive is cold to her the whole time and humiliates her. When Serena returns from abroad, Heidi asks for a divorce. Clive keeps hurting her for Serena's sake, and when Heidi is seriously injured he leaves her where she is. Heidi leaves, picks up her brush again and moves abroad, where her work as an artist takes off. Seth Fuller, whom she has known since they were children, begins a new life there with her. Clive realizes what he had only after she is gone, and his attempts to get her back go nowhere.
