Carol married Nigel in exchange for a bride price that would clear the debts left by her mother's medical treatment. She delivers food part time and lost her mother young. She had met Nigel's grandfather on the street, where he was taken for a man who could not pay for a bag of steamed buns, and she helped him out. The old man turned out to be the head of the richest family in Denton, and he pushed his grandson into a blind date with her. Nigel went through with the marriage because his grandfather made him, did not trust Carol, and kept from her that he is the richest man in the city. They warmed to each other after they started living in the same house, with the hidden identity sitting under it the whole time.
