The switch was made on a wedding night in 1977. Javier Harmon and his cousin Mitch traded brides, and from that night their lives went in different directions. Mitch ended up with money and comfort. Javier watched it, could not stand it, and one day he came at Mitch with a knife. Both cousins died. Then they opened their eyes on that same wedding night in 1977, both of them carrying what they remembered of how it had gone the first time. Javier did not make the trade this time. He married Patsy Reeves, the girl the family had adopted, and expected that to take Mitch's future away from him. It went the other way and he ended up worse off than he had been.
