Amelia Baker is carrying triplets and does not tell the father. The father is Daniel Wood, who runs the Wood Group and who slept with her once. Keeping it from him does not hold, because the Wood men can feel it when a child of theirs is coming, and Daniel knows before she says anything. Before that night she had come to the city from a village and was on probation at the company, where the director made her days difficult and her birth family kept turning up to take what she had. She was kept on as permanent staff after the night with Daniel. Once he knows about the pregnancy, Daniel changes how he behaves towards her. He deals with the people setting traps for her at work, and he goes at her family over what they have been taking from her.
