Sophie Stone got into bed with Victor Hayes to settle a score with the woman she was competing with, who is his niece. Victor is the money behind a large business house, and everyone around Sophie assumed that a girl her own family treated as a burden would be skinned alive for provoking him. That is not how he handled it. He kept her, paid for her, and said in front of people who had known him for years that his support went to Sophie regardless of who was in the right. The trouble came out of her own household.
